Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
