Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
